Cunningham | Quill Architects was engaged by the owners of this home in Chevy Chase, Maryland, to remove a twenty year-old addition and revive the character and charm of their original home. Working within the footprint of a previous addition, spaces on both floors were reconfigured to better suit the needs of a growing family. The design connects the living spaces of the addition to its deep wooded lot while the simplified form provides greater harmony to the original house.
On the first floor the kitchen was moved to create an integrated kitchen, breakfast room, and family room area. The deck and railing was removed and replaced by a screened in porch with a better visual connection to the back yard. Upstairs the master bedroom was reorganized to add a nursery and an expanded dressing area and bath. All of the windows and doors of the old addition were replaced to create a final design in unity with original house.
